Leenane Self Catering Holiday Cottages, County Galway, Ireland

Leenane, from the Irish ‘An Líonán’ meaning ‘where the tide fills’, is situated at the head of Killary Harbour and is often aptly described as the ‘Gateway to Connemara’. The roads from Maam, Clifden, and Westport meet at this point.

Killary Harbour extends ten miles inland and with the mountains rising steeply on either side provides what is probably the best scenery in Ireland. Walkers have access to Mweelrea, Sheefry, Paltry and Maumturk Mountains.

Following torrential rain in July 2007, the only river bridge in the village was swept away, cutting the town in half. It had stood there for 182 years. A permanent replacement bridge was constructed with increased hydraulic capacity.
